Video: Mariners’ Robinson Cano adds another massive HR to All-Star push

Robinson Cano may not be among the top five vote-getters for the American League’s starting second base spot in the upcoming All-Star Game, but he’s making sure his numbers are at least worthy of consideration for manager Terry Francona to name him one of the reserves in the midsummer classic.

Cano crushed a massive solo home run on Wednesday, a 413-foot shot to right-center field, to give the Mariners a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning of their homestand finale against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was his 14th home run of the season for the six-time All-Star, and it drove in his 52nd RBI, which ties him for fourth in the AL. The home run was the first hit in a two-knock game for the 34-year-old superstar.

Mariners manager Scott Servais: Kyle Seager is going to get hot

Among AL second basemen, Cano ranks first in RBIs, second in homers, four in WAR, fifth in OPS, sixth in runs scored, and seventh in walks this season.

Houston’s Jose Altuve currently leads the AL All-Star race at second base, followed by Starlin Castro of New York, Jason Kipnis of Cleveland, Whit Merrifield of Kansas City and Dustin Pedroia of Boston.

As of Monday, Seattle’s Nelson Cruz was the leading vote-getter at designated hitter with 1,366,962 votes, holding a narrow lead over Tampa Bay’s Corey Dickerson (1,267,234).
