LISTEN: UW football coach Chris Petersen on Jake Browning, Huskies defense

It was already known that Jake Browning had filled out his frame significantly this offseason. There’s another reason to feel good about the Husky quarterback heading into 2017: He’s completely recovered from shoulder surgery.

“He’s full-go right now, without question,” Huskies coach Chris Petersen said on “Brock and Salk” Tuesday. “Absolutely no restrictions whatsoever.”

That’s great news for Washington, which is looking to show that its breakout 2016 season with Browning as a sophomore was just the start of the Huskies becoming a perennial national title contender. UW isn’t taking anything for granted with Browning, however. Petersen said the Husky football training staff led by Rob Scheidegger talked to both the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons to find out how Drew Brees and Matt Ryan changed their approaches after suffering shoulder injuries. As a result, there are some new methods being used with Washington’s QBs.

“(As) those bodies get older, they have a completely different protocol in how they warm up, what their workout routine is, and so (Scheidegger) really looked into that,” Petersen said. “That’s the beauty about our program here. Every group that has their area of responsibility is trying to create this pocket of excellence, and our trainers are no different. So they’ve got Jake and our quarterbacks going through a different warmup procedure, to pay attention to pitch count, to help them warm up, to maybe not throw as many balls but strengthen our arm and be fresher. (Browning) is on that program right now; we’re excited about it.”

Just as encouraged as Petersen is about the status of Browning’s shoulder, he – like Brock Huard – is impressed with how Browning’s body has transformed entering his junior season.

“He’s looking good,” Petersen said. “He’s one of those guys, when he walked in here a few years ago as a freshman, he kinda has broad shoulders anyways. … He’s just kinda filling that out and he looks better and he looks sturdier and all those type of things.”
