LISTEN: How Huskies QB Jake Browning looks different

Former University of Washington and NFL quarterback Brock Huard said he was never in better shape in his life than going into his junior year of college. And when he saw Jake Browning in person last week at an event, he thought it might be the same for the Huskies’ current QB.

“He looked like he put on some grown-man weight,” Huard said on the Blue 42 segment of “Brock and Salk” Friday. “I don’t know if it’s five pounds, 10 pounds. … if he were working my camp next month like he did last year, you would see him and go ‘Oh.’ Not spindly. Not little.”

Browning is indeed entering his junior season with Washington, which will also be his third running the offense for Chris Petersen’s team. He’s already had an impressive career with the Dawgs, but even as a sophomore in 2016 when he helped UW reach the national semifinals, nobody would confuse him for a grizzled football veteran. Even so, he had a remarkable campaign, throwing for 3,430 yards and 43 touchdowns, so the 21-year-old filling out some can only improve his chances of winning prestigious awards and hearing his name called in the first round of the NFL Draft should he choose to test the waters after the 2017 season.

“He’s no longer the young pup. No longer the total babyface,” Huard said. “He’s gonna be a junior, he’s gonna be draft-eligible, and with an enormous, big year, I think he’ll legitimately be in some of those kinds of conversations.”

You can hear the full context of Huard on Browning in this podcast.
