Mariners notebook: Jean Segura looks forward to testing ankle in games

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jean Segura tested out his ankle before Saturday’s game by running the bases, taking leads and getting back to the bag. All appeared to go well. He is not running at 100 percent, and probably won’t be until he has had time to get comfortable with how his ankle responds at game pace, but everything is moving in a good direction. With any luck, he should return to the Mariners early next week.
“I feel OK,” he said. “I’m not going to tell you I feel 100 percent. That’s not going to happen because when you have an injury you are going to worry about it. It’s going to take a little bit to trust. It’s like my hamstring when I came back there was a little hesitation, but after I got going I felt good and it was gone.”
Segura is relieved that the injury was not as serious as originally thought. At the time he was afraid he had broken his leg. When the diagnosis of a high ankle sprain came down it was believed that he would miss a minimum of one month with general manager Jerry Dipoto cautioning it could be two. He has missed 15 games, and, with any luck, could be back mid-week after a short rehab assignment in Tacoma.

• Mike Zunino hammered – and I mean hammered – his seventh home run of the year in the Mariners’ 10-4 loss Saturday to the Rangers, a blast that went 463 feet, good for the 18th longest in MLB this year. The three-run shot gave Zunino 22 RBIs in June, setting a new club record for RBIs in a month by a catcher. Dan Wilson held the previous record with 21.
• While the Mariners have been putting up the runs in June – the team averaged 5.93 runs per game for the month heading into Saturday’s game – there has been a power outage in the the middle of the lineup. Robinson Cano has gone homerless for 11 games, his longest drought of the year, and Nelson Cruz has matched his longest home run drought of 10 games.
• The Mariners made a few roster moves before Saturday’s game. Zac Curtis was optioned back to Double-A Arkansas after pitching three innings Friday night and Rob Whalen was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners also claimed RHP Pat Light from Pittsburgh and outrighted Ryne Harper to Tacoma to make room on the 40-man roster, which remains full.
