The Mariners have another fresh arm available for relief and another potential option to eventually join their bullpen.
Right-handed pitcher Rob Whalen was recalled Saturday from Triple-A Tacoma, while lefty Zac Curtis was optioned to Double-A Arkansas. Seattle also claimed Pat Light, another righty reliever, from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and outrighted Ryne Harper to Tacoma to make room for Light on the 40-man roster.
Curtis, 24, threw three innings Friday in the Mariners’ loss, giving up three runs, after being recalled earlier in the day. It was his second stint with Seattle this season.
Whalen, 23, returns to the Mariners for his third tour with the team this season. He has made one appearance, allowing five runs over 5 1/3 innings on May 27.
The 26-year-old Light appeared in 17 MLB games last season with Minnesota and Boston and has spent this season with Pittsburgh’s Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis.
Whalen is with the Mariners as they continue their three-game set in Texas at 2:05 on 710 ESPN Seattle. Here are the full lineups.
