Second baseman Robinson Cano will return to action Tuesday for the Mariners after a short stint on the disabled list for a quad strain.
Cano, 34, has been activated from the 10-day DL ahead of Seattle’s three-game series against the National League East-leading Washington Nationals and is in the lineup hitting third for Tuesday’s opener at 4:05 on 710 ESPN Seattle.

In 34 games this season, Cano is hitting .296 with eight home runs, 28 RBIs and an .895 OPS. In the five games before he hit the DL, Cano went 10 for 19 with three home runs and seven RBIs. He is coming off an All-Star season in 2016 in which he hit 39 home runs and scored 107 runs – both career highs – along with a .298/.350/.533 slash line and 103 RBIs.
The Mariners cleared the way for Cano’s return with a series of roster moves Monday.
Christian Bergman will start on the mound for Seattle in Tuesday’s series opener in Washington, while Mike Zunino will catch in his first game since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. Nelson Cruz, who has appeared only as a designated hitter in 2017, will make his season debut in the outfield as the M’s are playing in a National League ballpark without the DH.
Coverage will begin on 710 ESPN Seattle at 3 with the pregame show.
Update: Danny Valencia, who has been nursing a wrist injury, was scratched for the lineup. Taylor Motter takes his place at first base.
