The Mariners recalled pitcher Chris Heston and first baseman Daniel Vogelbach from Triple-A Sunday morning so that both could start that afternoon at Safeco Field against the White Sox.

Heston, 29, was 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA and a team-leading 28 strikeouts over six starts with the Rainiers. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder had gone at least five innings in five of his six starts with Tacoma. He was recalled from Triple-A on April 23 and appeared in one game for Seattle, allowing five runs on seven hits (two home runs) in two innings on April 25 at Detroit. He was optioned to Tacoma following that game.

To make room for Heston, the M’s optioned lefty reliever Dillon Overton to Tacoma. The 25-year-old has posted a 6.38 ERA with eight strikeouts and two walks in nine games (one start) over two stints with Seattle this season. He allowed five runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings in Saturday night’s 16-1 loss to the White Sox.

Vogelbach batted seventh in the series finale vs. Chicago, with the team optioning utility infielder Mike Freeman to the minors.

Vogelbach entered the day hitting .262 with 13 runs, five homers and 24 RBI in 31 games for Triple-A Tacoma. He has had less success in six games this season with Seattle, batting .143 with just one RBI. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners last season.

Freeman had had just two hits in 30 at-bats during a pair of stints with Seattle this season.
