The Mariners have selected right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber from Triple-A Tacoma and will give him the start in Saturday’s 10:07 a.m. game on 710 ESPN Seattle.
To make room for Weber on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated relief pitcher Jean Machi for assignment.
Weber, 26, has a Pacific Coast League-leading 0.85 ERA in six games (five starts) for the Rainiers this year. He was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves last offseason. In parts of two seasons with the Braves, he had a 1-4 record and 5.15 ERA over 21 appearances (seven starts).
Machi, 35, has been a bright spot for Seattle since coming up from Tacoma, but was the odd man out with the Mariners having four starting pitchers on the disabled list and needing a starter for Saturday. In five games, he allowed just one run over 7 2/3 innings.
Also on Saturday morning, Seattle provided an update on Hisashi Iwakuma, who was placed on the DL earlier in the week. His right shoulder inflammation has been confirmed by team medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan, and he is expected to be out of action for four to six weeks.
Here is Seattle’s full lineup for Saturday’s game, which does not include Robinson Cano, who will sit for the third straight day with a sore quad.
