Pete Carroll on Seahawks DE Frank Clark’s insulting tweet: ‘Frank did not handle that real well’

May 12, 2017, 4:51 PM

RENTON – Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had this to say Friday when asked about the insulting tweet that defensive end Frank Clark aimed at a reporter earlier this week:

“Frank did not handle that real well. I think he’s done a nice job to recognize and made a statement and an apology. I think he’s definitely learned from that. Sometimes that lesson for other people as well can be valuable and I’m hoping that Frank will do a nice job of communicating that to other guys in the locker room. So I’m glad that thing’s behind us.”

In a since-deleted tweet from Tuesday, Clark wrote to Natalie Weiner of Bleacher Report: “People like you don’t have long careers in your field. I have a job for you cleaning my fish tank when that lil job is ova.” Weiner recently wrote a story about former Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy, who was accused of domestic violence. She had previously written about Clark, who was arrested in 2014 on a domestic violence charge that was later reduced in a plea deal.

Later than night, Clark issued an initial apology in which he didn’t address Weiner by name: “Apologize to anyone who felt offended by my tweet earlier. We gotta do better supporting these major issues we face in this world.” The Seahawks said Wednesday that they met with Clark in the morning “and expressed our extreme disappointment with his judgment.”

Clark then issued a second apology Wednesday night from the team’s headquarters. It read: “I understand the seriousness of this subject. I want to apologize to Natalie Weiner for letting my emotions get the best of me about comments made towards my personal life and family. I have worked hard over the last two years to do right, not only for myself, but for my family as well. I will continue on this path, on and off the field.”
