The Mariners have made another bullpen change ahead of their four-game series in Toronto, recalling lefty Zac Curtis from Double-A Arkansas and optioning right-hander Dan Altavilla to Triple-A Tacoma.

Altavilla started the season with Seattle but was sent to Tacoma on April 21 after some initial struggles. He rejoined the M’s last week after injuries and a 13-inning game depleted the bullpen. The 24 year old pitched in three games after his return, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four in three innings.

Altavilla was called up on May 6 along with Rob Whalen, who was optioned back to Triple-A the next day. Mariners manager Scott Servais spoke on the situation that prompted Seattle to recalled the time the pair at the time.

“There’s sometimes no perfect time to go get these guys,” Servais said. “Sometimes it’s on a need basis, and that’s where we’re at right now. … I think with the guys active today, maybe it’s like 22 pitchers we’ve used so far. It’s May 6, so it’s a unique situation we’re in.”

Curtis, 24, was acquired by Seattle along with Jean Segura and Mitch Haniger from Arizona for Taijuan Walker and Ketel Marte over the offseason. The southpaw went 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA, 10 strikeouts and 13 walks over 21 games with the Diamondbacks last season, his first in the MLB. With Arkansas, he posted a 3.21 ERA and three saves in 14 innings over 10 appearances.

The Mariners also announced that they have claimed 29-year-old right-handed pitcher Casey Lawrence off waivers from Toronto and transferred Evan Scribner to the 60-day disabled list to make room for him on the 40-man roster. An eight-year veteran of the minor leagues, Lawrence made his MLB debut on April 8 with the Blue Jays and was designated for assignment after going 0-3 with an 8.78 ERA in four games, including two starts.

Scribner was placed on the 10-day DL on April 26 with a right flexor bundle strain.
