LISTEN: LSU coach Ed Orgeron on new Seahawks lineman Ethan Pocic

The Seahawks needed to find some help for their offensive line in last weekend’s NFL Draft, and they didn’t wait long to do so, selecting LSU’s Ethan Pocic with their second pick of the event in the second round.

You can see why the Seahawks thought that highly of Pocic to use an early pick on him. He has experience playing in an offense similar to Seattle’s with the Tigers, and he faced stiff competition in the always competitive SEC. That how LSU’s head coach Ed Orgeron sees it, at least, as he told “Brock and Salk” on Wednesday.

“Ethan’s a tremendous fit for the type of zone scheme that Tom Cable and Pete Carroll run,” Orgeron said. “Ethan’s been going against some very good defensive lines everyday in practice … and going against some very good defensive lines in the SEC West. I think he’s very well prepared to have some success in the NFL.”

Pocic brings size to the position – he is listed as 6 foot 6 and 317 pounds – but perhaps most valuable to the Seahawks is that he has experience playing all over the line. Though he leaves LSU as a center, that’s the position Seattle is most settled at with Justin Britt entrenched at the spot. But there could be an advantage for the Seahawks to have somebody talented enough to play center but big enough to play tackle next to Britt.

“Obviously you know he played several positions. … I think he’ll fit in at center or right tackle, (but) he can play either guard,” Orgeron said. “Any time you get a center that can single-block a nose tackle, you’re winning, and he can do that. … He’s an excellent athlete, he has length.”

Simply put, Orgeron is very optimistic that Pocic will become a mainstay on Seattle’s O-line.

“I think this guy is going to be a tremendous player for the Seahawks. He’s a leader. He’s a great guy off the field. … You’re getting the full package with Ethan Pocic.”
