Nathan Hale basketball coach Brandon Roy is recovering from a gunshot wound over the weekend in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports.

A source told KIRO 7 that Roy was not the intended target. He is now back in Seattle and is recovering.

USA Today, crediting a person with knowledge of the situation, reported that Roy was hit by random gunfire outside his grandmother’s house while shielding some kids who were there.

Roy played his college career at the University of Washington from 2002 to 2006, where he became the 31st player in school history to score 1,000 points. He was named a consensus first-team AP All-American.

In 2006, Roy entered the NBA draft and was selected in the first round (6th overall) by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was traded to Portland on draft night and played with the Trail Blazers until 2011. He finished his career with Minnesota from 2012-2013.

The Trail Blazers issued the following statement on Tuesday night in response to the reports: “Like many others, we’re just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California. According to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time.”

Over his professional career, Roy won the NBA Rookie of the Year award, he appeared in three NBA All-Star games, was twice named to All-NBA teams, placing on the second team All-NBA in 2009 and third team in 2010.

Multiple knee injuries forced Roy out of the NBA and he took over as coach of the Nathan Hale team in 2016. He led the group to an undefeated (29-0) record during the regular season and was named the Naismith National High School Coach of the Year.

KIRO 7 contributed to this story.
