WSU safety Shalom Luani goes to Raiders in seventh round

Shalom Luani was the only Washington State player picked in the 2017 NFL Draft, going to the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round as the 221st overall selection.

Luani, a 5-foot-11, 202-pound safety, made 159 total tackles, including 12 tackles for loss, eight interceptions and three forced fumbles in two seasons on the field for the Cougars. At one time a soccer star in his native American Samoa, he arrived in Pullman before the 2015 season as a junior college transfer. He earned All-Pac-12 honors both seasons, including a first team selection in 2016.
Wide receiver Gabe Marks, who had the best chance of any other Cougars to be selected, went undrafted. According to multiple reports, he has hooked on with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent.
