For the first time this season, the Mariners will have the usual four-man bench. The bad news is how the opportunity to do so presented itself.
Seattle placed right-handed reliever Evan Scribner on the 10-day disabled list with a flexor bundle strain on Saturday morning. In his place, they called up outfielder Boog Powell, who will make his MLB debut in his first appearance in a game.

Scribner, 31, has been used in eight games by the M’s this season, allowing nine runs in 7 1/3 innings for an 11.05 ERA. He had a lengthy DL stay last season as well with a strained lat muscle. His placement on the DL is retroactive to Wednesday, April 26.
The 24-year-old Powell was one of the first acquisitions made by Seattle under general manager Jerry Dipoto, who picked him up in a trade shortly after the 2015 season from Tampa Bay. He is hitting .261 with 13 runs, five stolen bases and a .424 on-base percentage since returning early this season from an 80-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s drug agreement by testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug.
The Mariners will continue their series in Cleveland with a 1:10 p.m. game Saturday.
