The Mariners received news back on the injuries that landed pitcher Felix Hernandez and right fielder Mitch Haniger on the disabled list earlier this week.
Both players are expected to miss three to four weeks of action, with the diagnoses being bursitis in the right shoulder for Hernandez and a grade 2 right oblique strain for Haniger. The pair came out of Tuesday’s game in Detroit with their injuries, were placed on the disabled list and flown back to Seattle on Wednesday, and were examined by team medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan on Friday.
Drayer: Depth coming up big for the Mariners
Hernandez gave up four runs on six hits and two walks over two innings before being pulled Tuesday, by far his shakiest outing of the young season. He is 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in five starts (26 2/3 innings).
Haniger has been Seattle’s best offensive player this season, hitting .338 with four home runs, 16 RBIs and a 1.042 OPS. He leads the American League with a WAR of 2.0.
In other Mariners injury news, right-handed pitcher Steve Cishek has had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Tacoma. The 30-year-old reliever has been working his way back from offseason surgery to repair a torn hip labrum, appearing in four games for Double-A Arkansas and one previous game with Tacoma.
