Jean Segura is back from a minor league rehab assignment and will return to his customary leadoff spot for the Mariners in Tuesday’s series opener in Detroit.
Not returning to the lineup, however, is third baseman Kyle Seager, who was also held out Sunday with a sore hip. Manager Scott Servais told the media that the decision to keep Seager out is precautionary.
Huard: Mariners may face more tough decisions soon
Segura was Seattle’s biggest pickup of the offseason, and the 27 year old shortstop got off to a great start with the team, hitting 10 for 32 (.313) with a home run, three RBIs, six runs and three stolen bases in eight games. He was sidelined in Seattle’s home opener vs. Houston on April 10 with a strained right hamstring, landing on the 10-day disabled list the next day. He appeared in three games with Double-A Arkansas, one as designated hitter and two at shortstop, before returning to the M’s.
The Mariners made room on their active roster for Segura on Monday by optioning utility man Mike Freeman to Triple-A Tacoma.
With Segura back and Seager still out, Taylor Motter will get the start at third base against Tigers right-hander Jordan Zimmerman. Motter, who started the season as Seattle’s utility player, had a very successful run filling in for Segura at shortstop, as he is currently hitting .255 with five homers, 10 runs scored and 15 RBIs.
On the mound for Seattle will be Felix Hernandez, who is 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA, 20 strikeouts and just one walk over four starts (24 2/3 innings).
First pitch for the Mariners and Tigers will be 4:10 on 710 ESPN Seattle. Coverage begins at 3 with the pregame show.
