Ichiro Suzuki won’t be located in Area 51, nor will he be hitting leadoff, but the former Mariners great will indeed start in his return to Safeco Field with the Miami Marlins on Monday night.
The 43-year-old Ichiro is penciled in to play left field – not right field, where he played the majority of his 11 1/2 seasons with the M’s – and hit ninth for the Marlins in a 7:10 p.m. game on 710 ESPN Seattle, marking his first appearance in Seattle with the Marlins, who he joined in 2015. He has seen limited playing time in a crowded Marlins outfield this year, making just 12 plate appearances in nine games. The Mariners, by the way, will honor Ichiro with a pregame ceremony at 7 p.m., as well as with a double-bobblehead giveaway on Wednesday.
Salk: Mariners have ‘difficult call to make’ on Mike Zunino
For Seattle, the lineup looks fairly standard for Monday’s series opener, with Danny Valencia hitting seventh, Leonys Martin hitting eighth, and Mike Zunino in the No. 9 spot.
Lefty Ariel Miranda will start on the mound for the Mariners against Marlins right-hander Tom Koehler.
