The hamstring injury that caused Jean Segura to leave Monday’s Mariners win will keep the 27-year-old shortstop out for longer than that.

Segura has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. Seattle has recalled utility infielder Mike Freeman from Triple-A Tacoma to take his place on the roster. Because Freeman wasn’t on Seattle’s 40-man roster, a result of him being designated for assignment in spring training, the Mariners had to designate left-handed pitcher Paul Fry for assignment to make room for Freeman.

With Segura out, the Mariners will go with left fielder Jarrod Dyson in the leadoff spot for Tuesday’s 7:10 game against Houston on 710 ESPN Seattle. Taylor Motter will replace Segura at shortstop, like he did Monday.

Segura, an offseason trade acquisition and one-time All-Star, has been Seattle’s most consistent hitter in the young 2017 season. He has a .313 average with one home run, three RBIs, six runs scored and three stolen bases in eight games. He came out of Monday’s game after diving back into first base on a line drive that resulted in a double play for the Astros, though manager Scott Servais said the initial injury occurred earlier in the game.

Servais added after the game that Segura’s injury was mild but that they would have to re-assess Tuesday. This could be a case of the Mariners taking advantage of the new disabled list, which requires players to be out a minimum of 10 days as opposed to 15 in previous years.

Freeman, 29, joined the Mariners late last season, appearing in 13 games and hitting 5 for 13 (.385). He is 4 for 12 in three games for Tacoma this year.

Fry, 24, was a 17th-round selection by Seattle in the 2013 MLB Draft. He has a 2.89 ERA over five minor-league seasons.

Here is the Mariners’ lineup for Tuesday:
