Mariners starter Drew Smyly scratched from Friday outing, scheduled to see doctor

PEORIA, Ariz. – Mariners left-hander Drew Smyly has been scratched from his Friday outing, concerning news with just five days to go before the season opener. Very few details were given about exactly what Smyly is dealing with.

“He didn’t feel great coming out of his bullpen yesterday. We are trying to get a feel for where he is at,” manager Scott Servais said Wednesday, adding that Smyly will see the team doctor later in the day.

Servais declined to elaborate on what specifically felt wrong for Smyly or when he first felt it.

“I don’t want to rush to any judgments. We wait and see what the docs say and go from there,” Servais said. “He’s just a little soggy.”

Drayer: Six days before opener, Mariners are “ready to go”

Smyly, who rehabbed a torn labrum in 2015, has had a somewhat unusual spring in that he left camp to pitch one game in the World Baseball Classic. While he wasn’t out as long as others who participated in the WBC, he did go nine days without pitching in a game. Smyly was extremely sharp in his outing against Team Venezuela on March 15, giving up just one run and striking out eight,  but surrendered four and five runs runs in his two outings since returning.

Smyly’s first regular-season start was scheduled to be April 6 against the Astros. If he is unable to make that start, Ariel Miranda or Dillon Overton are two candidates who could take his spot.

“We’ve got some depth,” Servais acknowledged. “I don’t even want to go there. I am waiting to see what we hear and go from there.”
