The Mariners have traded veteran outfielder Seth Smith to the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed starter Yovani Gallardo and cash, the team announced Friday morning.
Gallardo, who will turn 31 on Feb. 27, went 6-8 with a 5.42 ERA, 85 strikeouts and 61 walks in 23 starts with Baltimore in 2016. A 10-year MLB veteran, Gallardo was at one time the ace of the Milwaukee Brewers’ staff, and enjoyed a strong 2015 season with the Texas Rangers. He will help solidify Seattle’s starting rotation.
“Gallardo gives us the veteran presence that we have been searching for,” Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a press release. “He has a track record of durability and success as a starting pitcher. After examining the free agent and trade market, Yovani is the best fit for our club as we move forward this offseason.
Smith, 34, spent two years with the Mariners. Last season he posted a .249/.342/.415 slash line with 16 home runs and 63 RBIs in 137 games.
