The Mariners announced a pair of roster moves with left-handed pitchers on Friday, outrighting Dean Kiekhefer to Triple-A Tacoma and sending minor leaguer Tyler Pike to Atlanta to complete an earlier trade.
The 27-year-old Kiekhefer was claimed off waivers by Seattle from St. Louis last month and designated for assignment on Dec. 3 to create room on the 40-man roster for recent signings Marc Rzepczynski and Casey Fien. Kiekhefer made 26 relief appearances with the Cardinals last season, his first in the majors, posting a 5.32 ERA. He has a career 2.67 ERA over seven seasons in the minors.
Pike, 22, assumes the player to be named later role in the Mariners’ Nov. 28 trade with the Braves that brought them back right-handed pitchers Rob Whalen and Max Povse. Seattle previously sent minor-league outfielder Alex Jackson to Atlanta in the swap.
Pike was a third-round pick by the Mariners in the 2012 MLB Draft. In 113 starts over five seasons, he has a 4.04 ERA in the minors.
