UW suspends two football players as Seattle police investigate post-Super Bowl assault

Two University of Washington football players, including expected starting quarterback Cyler Miles, have been suspended indefinitely.

Head coach Chris Petersen suspended Miles and wide receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow for violating team rules, according to a statement issued Thursday by the UW.

The statement made no reference to a Seattle Police investigation of an assault involving two men following the Super Bowl. Police would not confirm that the two UW football players were suspects, but reports link the pair to the assault.

According to a police report, a man was walking with his girlfriend near NE 55th St. at about 10:30 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday when two men jumped out of a car and confronted him, asking if he was a Seahawks fan. The man told police he responded by asking them if they were Broncos fans. Police say the men then punched the pedestrian repeatedly, while a woman driving the car was yelling at them to get back in the car.

At some point, police were told that the two attackers matched the description of two people involved in an assault in the U-District, near where a mattress was set on fire in the street.

The police report said the victim in the second assault was shown photos of Huskies football players and identified two as his attackers. The officer who wrote the report said that the victim was “positive” about the identity of one attacker and “almost positive” about the other.

Police would not confirm the identity of the suspects in the post-Super Bowl attacks. Miles is from Denver and Stringfellow is from California.
