Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson injured his ankle during the third quarter of Seattle’s season opener on Sunday, and while he remained in the game to lead the winning touchdown drive, it looked severe enough to warrant at least some concern about his status.
“It’s a little sore, but I’ll be alright with a little ice and a little prayer, some treatment,” Wilson said after the Seahawks’ 12-10 win over Miami.
Said coach Pete Carroll: “We’re going to look at it. He got in a bad situation there, the way he got kicked. You saw that a bunch of times on the replays. We’ll see.”
The injury happened when Wilson’s right heel was stepped on – inadvertently – by Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh during a third-quarter sack, causing his foot to bend awkwardly. Wilson immediately grabbed his ankle then got up limping.
The degree to which his mobility was compromised after that was evident two plays later when, instead of trying to escape a collapsing pocket on third down, Wilson stood flat-footed and threw the ball away. He raised his right foot in apparent pain after releasing the ball then limped off the field.
Backup Trevone Boykin, the only other quarterback on Seattle’s roster, warmed up as trainers looked at Wilson on the sideline. He came back out for Seattle’s next possession with his ankle heavily taped.
Wilson scrambled for 4 yards on what turned out to be Seattle’s game-winning touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, but Carroll said the Seahawks adjusted their play-calling to keep him in the pocket knowing how much the injury was limiting his mobility. Wilson completed six of nine attempts for 56 yards on Seattle’s game-winning drive, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin for the go-ahead score.
He declined to reveal whether or not he needs an MRI or X-rays on his injured ankle.
“I don’t talk about that kind of stuff,” he said. “I’m not sure if Coach talks about that, but I never talk about anything like that. But I’ll be alright. I’ll be ready to roll.”
