With MLB rosters expanding for the final month of the regular season, the Mariners have added outfielder Ben Gamel and catcher Jesus Sucre.
Gamel, who was acquired Wednesday from the Yankees in a trade, has six games of major-league experience. He was named the International League’s MVP earlier this week after hitting .308 with 80 runs scored, 19 stolen bases and 37 extra-base hits in 116 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was also the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2015. The 24-year-old Gamel hits and throws left-handed, and he has a reputation for a strong arm and good defensive play in all three outfield positions.
Sucre, 28, has appeared 222 games over the past three seasons with the Mariners. He has a .176 career MLB average with one home run and 15 RBIs, and had one previous short stint with Seattle this season after recovering from surgery to repair a broken ankle. He has a .273 average with 11 RBIs in 29 games this year with Triple-A Tacoma. He is known more for his defensive prowess behind the plate than his offensive production.
Also new to the Mariners’ roster for Friday’s series opener against the Angels is right-handed reliever Evan Scribner, who was activated from the disabled list on Thursday.
