Cutting defensive back Brandon Browner was just one of several moves the Seahawks made Monday as they began to trim their roster from 90 to 75 ahead of Tuesday’s 1 p.m. deadline.
The were five others. Seattle placed defensive tackle Sealver Siliga on Injured Reserve and waived four players: linebacker Kyle Coleman, wide receivers Deshon Foxx (injured) and Montario Hunter as well as defensive end DeAngelo Tyson.
The Seahawks gave Siliga a one-year, $1.05 million deal over the offseason to provide depth as a run-stopping defensive tackle after losing starter Brandon Mebane earlier in free agency. But he’s hardly practiced since the start of training camp due to a calf injury that hasn’t healed properly.
Siliga could, in theory, return later this season under a new rule pertaining to players on IR. NFL teams are no longer required to designate players for return at the time they’re placed on IR, so the Seahawks will have the option of bringing Siliga depending on how well he’s healed and their needs at defensive tackle. As was the case under the previous rules, players on IR must miss at least eight weeks during the regular season before they’re eligible to play again, and teams can only recall one player from IR each season.
There could be another move in the works as ProFootballTalk.com reported Monday that Seattle is trying to trade center Patrick Lewis, who started nine games for the Seahawks last season but has been working behind Justin Britt and ahead of rookie sixth-round pick Joey Hunt. He doesn’t figure to be on Seattle’s roster, one way or another. If the Seahawks can’t find a trade partner for Lewis, then cutting him would relieve Seattle of the $1.671 million he’s scheduled to make on the one-year tender he signed as a restricted free agent, which is not guaranteed.
