The Mariners have selected pitcher Joe Wieland from Triple-A Tacoma and have scheduled him to start their series opener in Oakland on Friday night.
To make room for Wieland on the 40-man roster, outfielder Daniel Robertson has been designated for assignment.
Wieland steps into the rotation spot originally occupied by Ariel Miranda, who had to pitch in relief in Seattle’s 15-inning marathon with Detroit on Tuesday. The addition of Wieland also allows the Mariners to stick to their plan to skip over James Paxton during the series with the A’s. Paxton is nursing an elbow injury after being hit by a batted ball in his start last Sunday.

Wieland, 26, was acquired in a minor-league trade last offseason by Seattle from the Dodgers. He is 11-5 with a 5.38 ERA, 93 strikeouts and 31 walks in 22 Triple-A games (20 starts, 103 2/3 innings) this year. He has made 11 career MLB appearances, including nine starts, for the Dodgers and San Diego since 2013.
He takes the 25-man roster spot previously occupied by pitcher Jarrett Grube, who was optioned back to Tacoma following the Mariners’ win over Detroit on Wednesday night.
Robertson, 30, appeared in nine games for the Mariners this season, hitting .263 (5 for 19) with one run, one RBI, one double and a walk. He has spent the majority of the year with the Rainiers, playing in 95 games and hitting .281 with six home runs and 40 RBIs.
