The Mariners designated infielder Luis Sardinas for assignment on Wednesday afternoon to create room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Jarrett Grube, who has been recalled by Seattle to help out a taxed pitching staff after Tuesday’s 15-inning marathon.
Sardinas, 23, has been up and down between the Mariners and Triple-A Tacoma this season. Acquired from Milwaukee in a trade last offseason, he’s hit .181 with two home runs in 72 plate appearances for Seattle this season. He began the season on the Mariners’ active roster after a strong showing in spring training.
Grube, 34, has just one MLB game to his credit – a 2/3 innings outing in 2014 for the Angels. He has a 3.97 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 46 strikeouts and 12 walks in 45 1/3 innings for Tacoma this year. He has appeared in 10 games for the Rainiers, eight of which were starts, since being signed by the Mariners in June.
Grube takes the 25-man roster spot of outfielder Guillermo Heredia, who was optioned to Tacoma earlier in the day to make room for an extra pitcher.
