RENTON – The Seahawks will need a new plan at fullback with Brandon Cottom expected to miss the season due to an Achilles injury.
That seemed likely on Thursday when coach Pete Carroll said Cottom appeared to have hurt his Achilles in practice that day. Carroll wasn’t sure, but he used the word “devastating” while talking about the initial indication. A source confirmed Friday that it is indeed an Achilles injury and that Cottom likely won’t play this season.
Cottom is listed as a tight end, but he had worked as a fullback while on Seattle’s practice squad as a rookie last season and was working as Seattle’s No. 1 fullback during the first week of training camp.
With Cottom out and rookie Tre Madden dealing with a shoulder injury, rookie defensive tackle Taniela Tupou has been working at fullback the last few days. Tupou, a former Husky who went undrafted, worked at fullback earlier this offseason.
Derrick Coleman and Will Tukuafu split time as Seattle’s fullback the last few seasons, but neither were re-signed. They’re still free agents. Coleman was charged in June with vehicular assault and felony hit-and-run in connection with an October car crash in Bellevue.
