The Sounders announced on Wednesday they have signed Uruguayan playmaker Nicolas Lodeiro to a Designated Player contract.
After months of rumors, the organization finally got its man after coming to terms with both the player and his former club, Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors.
“We have doggedly pursued our top target, Nicolas Lodeiro, for the past several months and we are delighted our persistence finally paid off with his signing,” Sounders general manager Garth Lagerwey said. “We were willing to wait for Nico because we believe in his character off the field as well as his abilities on it.”

Lodeiro has played all over South America, and he’s also had a stint with Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie. He’s an established international with Uruguay, with whom he’s played in three Copa Americas (winning one) and two World Cups. Pending a work visa and International Transfer Clearance, Lodeiro will be immediately added to the Sounders’ roster.
