If there’s anybody who can share stories about Ken Griffey Jr. all day, it’s the voice of the Mariners, Rick Rizzs.
When Griffey arrived in Seattle in 1989, Rizzs had been around the team for six seasons, but he’d yet to see anything like The Kid. Then again, neither had anybody, really. That’s why Griffey will go into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday in Cooperstown after receiving the highest percentage of votes ever received by a player on the ballot.
Rizzs recalled to 710 ESPN Seattle’s John Clayton some of his favorite memories of Griffey’s time with the Mariners. You can listen here to a podcast of the interview, where he talks about the days when Junior hit behind his dad in the Mariners’ batting order, the infamous story about a cow in Lou Piniella’s office, and more.
