Mariners recall infielder Luis Sardinas ahead of Toronto series

The Mariners have recalled infielder Luis Sardinas from Triple-A Tacoma, and he will be in uniform for the start of their series in Toronto on Friday.
Seattle had an open spot on its 25-man roster after sending pitcher Mike Montgomery to the Cubs in a four-player trade, and there was a need for an extra option at shortstop as Ketel Marte missed the last two games with an illness and did not travel on the team’s flight to Toronto. Marte is unlikely to go on the 15-day disabled list and could arrive in Canada sometime this weekend, however.
Sardinas, 23, began the season on the Mariners’ roster but has spent the majority of the year with the Rainiers. This will be his third stint with the big club this season.
In 25 MLB games in 2016, Sardinas has a .190 average, two home runs, 10 runs scored and five RBIs. He’s mainly played shortstop but has also seen time at first base, second base, third base and left field.
In 42 games in Triple-A, he’s hitting .250 with 17 runs, four doubles and 17 RBIs.
The Mariners’ series opener with the Blue Jays is set for 4:07 on 710 ESPN Seattle. The pregame show begins at 3.
