Nelson Valdez scored a tying goal in the second half, reserve goalkeeper Tyler Miller turned in a stellar performance and the Sounders beat Real Salt Lake on penalty kicks Tuesday night in Sandy, Utah to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup.
The Sounders will face either the Los Angeles Galaxy or the Portland Timbers on July 20.
Valdez scored in the 52nd minute to tie the match at 1-1, which is where it remained through regulation and extra time. Seattle’s Herculez Gomez, Jordan Morris, Zach Scott and Erik Friberg converted penalty kicks to win the shootout 4-1.
Goalkeeper Stefan Frei was among the starters that Seattle rested ahead of Saturday’s MLS match against Toronto.
