BOSTON – As expected the Mariners made moves before game one of the three game series against the Red Sox. Another is most likely coming.
The team announced the following moves.
• Right-handed pitcher Jonathan Aro recalled from AAA Tacoma.
• Left-handed pitcher David Rollins recalled from AAA Tacoma.
• Left-handed pitcher Wade Miley placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 13.
• Right-handed pitcher Steve Johnson designated for assignment.
The additions of Aro and Rollins were needed after the bullpen was taxed in the series against the Rays.
Miley goes on the disabled list with a left shoulder impingement. He was scheduled to make the start Saturday but all indications are Adrian Sampson will make that start instead. He will need to be placed on the 40-man roster which following the Johnson DFA now has a spot open.
Sampson, who attended Skyline High School in Sammamish, was acquired in the trade for J.A. Happ. With the Rainiers this year he has gone 7-4 with a 3.25 ERA and struck out 61 while walking just 12 in 13 starts. If he does indeed get the start it will be his Major League debut.
