Seahawks LG Robert Gallery has to man up in a hurry

Nov 3, 2011, 4:31 PM | Updated: 4:42 pm

There were plenty of reasons to be concerned about the Seahawks’ offensive line heading into this season.

Left tackle Russell Okung couldn’t stay healthy as a rookie. Center Max Unger didn’t play last year and was adjusting to a new position. Right guard John Moffitt and right tackle James Carpenter were starting as rookies.

Robert Gallery, the left guard signed in free agency, figured to be the most reliable member of Seattle’s offensive line.

Staying healthy wasn’t exactly a given for Gallery — he had dealt with injuries during his last two years in Oakland. But he was expected to play much better than he has, especially considering his familiarity with offensive line coach Tom Cable and the system he ran with the Raiders.

Gallery struggled in the preseason, then missed three regular-season games with a groin injury that required surgery. Brock Huard pointed to a missed block by Gallery as the reason Seattle’s fourth-down play came up short on Sunday against the Bengals.

Brock and Salk think that, assuming Gallery is healthy, he should be playing better.
