ESPN NFL analyst Tim Hasselbeck is among those who believe that pursuing Green Bay’s Matt Flynn would be a good move for the Seahawks.

He also thinks another team’s backup quarterback could be an option, too.

Hasselbeck joined “Brock and Salk” on Wednesday and offered a glowing review of New England’s Brian Hoyer, who has spent three seasons backing up Tom Brady. Hoyer, 26, will be a free agent when this season ends.

“He’s played extremely well in every single preseason game he’s played in. Because the Patriots have blown people out he’s played in the regular season and come in with a foot of snow on the ground and actually thrown the ball really well,” Hasselbeck said, referring to a 2009 game against the Titans in which Hoyer was 9 of 11 for 52 yards and a rushing touchdown. “I find that to be impressive.”

Most of Hoyer’s regular-season playing time has come in spot duty. He’s appeared in 13 games with no starts, completing 27 of 43 pass attempts (62.7 percent) for 286 yards, a touchdown and an interception. In 10 preseason games, Hoyer has completed 60.1 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,121 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

“I think that the only backup quarterback that played better than Matt Flynn in the preseason was Brian Hoyer,” Hasselbeck said.

Hoyer went undrafted out of Michigan State in 2009 — something Hasselbeck said he was “stunned” by — and immediately won the Patriots’ backup job, beating out other quarterbacks the team had drafted. Hasselbeck said Hoyer has an above average arm and noted that the various injuries that have kept Brady out of practice have given Hoyer plenty of time to work with the Patriots’ No. 1 offense.

“I think Brian Hoyer, without question, can be a very good starting quarterback in the NFL,” Hasselbeck said.

Note: Hasselbeck was speaking with the assumption that Hoyer will be an unrestricted free agent, but from what I can gather he will be a restricted free agent.

Brock Huard weighs in on Hasselbeck’s thoughts in Wednesday’s Wrap Up video.
