Robert Gallery’s knowledge of Tom Cable’s zone-blocking scheme and the veteran presence he could provide to the Seahawks’ young offensive line were primary reasons Seattle signed him to a three-year, $15 million deal last summer.

After one injury-plagued season, Gallery is gone.

The Seahawks released the 31-year-old left guard on Wednesday and re-signed versatile offensive lineman Paul McQuistan.

Gallery missed four games with knee and groin injuries and never appeared to be fully healthy. A source told 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock Huard after the Seahawks’ Week 8 loss to the Bengals that Gallery was almost replaced during that game.

Gallery was due a base salary of $5 million in 2012.

His release could open the door for the Seahawks to sign guard Steve Hutchinson, who made a free-agent visit with the team Wednesday. Hutchinson, 34, was a first-round pick by the Seahawks in 2001. He made three Pro Bowl appearances and helped Seattle reach its first ever Super Bowl following the 2005 season before a contract dispute led to his controversial departure.

The Seahawks hosted another offensive lineman, Frank Omiyale, for a visit last week.

McQuistan, meanwhile, started 10 games for the Seahawks last season, providing versatility that was needed for an offensive line that lost three starters to season-ending injuries. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.
