How did Tarvaris Jackson take the news that the Seahawks had signed another quarterback who could be taking his starting job?

Jackson-statsPretty well, according to fullback Michael Robinson.

“He’s excited about it,” Robinson told “Brock and Salk” on Tuesday. “He’s looking at it as a chance to up his game a little bit more to show that he can be a full-time starter in this league and do well. So he was excited about it.”

The Seahawks signed former Packers backup Matt Flynn to a three-year, $26 million deal earlier this month and said he would compete with Jackson, the team’s incumbent starter. Robinson said he called Jackson after the signing was announced, hesitant to bring up what might be a sensitive topic.

“He was excited,” Robinson said of Jackson. “He said, ‘Mike, you know, this always happens to me and I’m ready for it to bring the best out of me.'”

This is somewhat familiar territory for Jackson. After starting five games for the Vikings in 2008, his hopes of winning the starting job the following season were dashed when the team signed Brett Favre during training camp. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has stressed that Flynn is not being handed the job. He’ll have to beat out Jackson, who was 7-7 in 14 starts in 2011 and played with a torn pectoral muscle for much of the season.

“I think it should be fun,” Robinson said. “If it is a true open competition I’m interested to see the ball being thrown around a little bit during the camps and training camps and things like that. I’m excited to see it.”
