Huard: Seahawks getting Russell Wilson’s guy at OC in Shane Waldron

The Seahawks’ reported pick of Rams passing game coordinator Shane Waldron as the team’s next offensive coordinator has been met with good reviews thus far, but we have yet to hear from three of the most important people in the organization about what they think.

Former NFL quarterback Brock Huard joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny and Gallant Thursday to discuss the news, which ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke Tuesday night. He said he thinks when we finally hear from head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider once the hire is made official, they will rave about Waldron’s experience, which includes working for Bill Belichick in New England and most recently with Sean McVay in Los Angeles for the Rams.

“They love, I think from a hiring standpoint, somebody that’s got background in all of those areas, brings that experience,” Huard said.

But what about the quarterback?

After Brian Schottenheimer was let go following his third season as Seahawks offensive coordinator, star quarterback Russell Wilson made it clear when talking to reporters that he felt he needed to be involved in Seattle’s search for Schottenheimer’s replacement.

It’s been unknown to this point whether or not Wilson did ultimately have any say or sway in the overall search or the reported hire. Huard has a bit of insight into Wilson’s thoughts on Waldron reportedly coming to Seattle, though.

“I’ll say this: Before the hire was made, before that news came out, there were a number of different people that said to me this was Russell’s guy,” Huard said. “That as Russell consulted – I don’t know if he sat in the Zoom meetings with all of the different candidates or they narrowed it down and it came to a (down) to a few (choices) – this was one that he was very excited about. That if Russell Wilson had any say in it or had a vote in it, this would be the guy that he ended up getting very, very comfortable with.”

Wilson and Carroll had slightly differing opinions on the future of the Seahawks’ offense after the season ended, with Carroll telling reporters that he thinks Seattle needs to run more so opposing defenses stop playing with two high safeties while Wilson said he wants to play with more urgency and tempo.

“I think I take that as a positive that (Waldron is) who (Wilson) wanted, married with what Pete wanted, and (has) a background that made everybody comfortable,” Huard said.

The Seahawks aren’t set up well in terms of making a lot of moves this offseason as the team has limited available cap space and currently has only four draft picks, including none in the first or third rounds. Huard says Waldron’s experience is going to be extremely helpful because it’s unlikely Schneider is able to conduct “an entire home makeover” on offense.

“I think with his background he’s able to say, ‘OK, here’s ideally what I like to do, here’s ideally where I think the league is going, here’s ideally what Russell is best suited for and is capable of doing. Now do I have the talent (on the offensive line) to run all of the things that we did for the last four years with the Rams? No,'” Huard said. ” … I don’t think you’ve got some of the real nimble tackles and some of that outside zone or whatever. Can you still incorporate slices of it? Yes. And will he? Yes. But I think having enough background in those different systems, that I think is most encouraging, that he’ll be able to look at the personnel and go ‘OK, let’s do this. And let’s make the quarterback most comfortable by doing that as well.'”
