Seahawks defensive end Red Bryant did not participate in practice on Wednesday and his status for Sunday’s game against Chicago is not certain.

“His foot is really bothering him,” coach Pete Carroll said. “He’s got a plantar fascia issue that he’s dealing with. He’s had it for a a while, it’s just kind of flared up here in the last couple of weeks.”

Carroll said the injury has affected Bryant to the point that it is important for the team to slow him down in practice. Carroll also said he did not know whether or not Bryant would be available to play on Sunday.

If Bryant is ultimately ruled out, defensive tackle Alan Branch would slide outside and rookie defensive end Greg Scruggs would start for Branch.

Linebacker Leroy Hill also did not participate in Wednesday’s practice.

“His ankle is still bothering him and we are going to take care of him today and see how it goes,” Carroll said. “I can’t tell you how that’s going to play out yet, the trainers don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Carroll said Malcolm Smith would be available to start for Hill if needed.

Guard James Carpenter was a full-go on Wednesday. Last Sunday in Miami marked the first game Carpenter played since returning from his concussion. Carroll said with guard John Moffitt also back and a full participant in practice, both linemen will continue to “battle and compete” for the starting left guard position.

Following practice, the Seahawks released the following statement from cornerbacks Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman:

“To allow our focus to remain on football, during the appeal process we will refrain from any further public comments regarding this situation. Thank you for your consideration on this matter.”

Wednesday’s practice report

DID NOT PARTICIPATE: DE Red Bryant (foot) and LB Leroy Hill (ankle).
LIMITED PARTICIPATION: RB Marshawn Lynch (back) and DE Greg Sruggs (oblique).
