The Seahawks aren’t going full rest mode in their season finale with the San Francisco 49ers, but with the playoffs right around the corner and Seattle likely not getting a bye next week, multiple veteran players have the game off.

Heaps: Why Adams’ contract talks with the Seahawks won’t be simple

The most notable players sitting out are tight end Greg Olsen, running back Carlos Hyde and left guard Mike Iupati.

Olsen just came back in Week 16 from a torn plantar fascia in his foot, and Jacob Hollister and Will Dissly have played well in his place. Head coach Pete Carroll said Friday that Olsen would sit this game out.

Hyde didn’t make the trip to Arizona after being kept out of practice all week with a non-COVID-19 illness (the 49ers have called State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., home the last month due to COVID-19 restrictions in Santa Clara County).

Iupati has battled neck stingers throughout his career and suffered another one early in Week 15. He sat out Week 16 and will miss the season finale as he hopes to get ready for the playoffs. Jordan Simmons will again start in Iupati’s place.

Rounding out the inactives list for Seattle are rookie running back DeeJay Dallas, backup cornerback Jayson Stanley and backup defense end Jonathan Bullard.

Dallas hasn’t played since he suffered an ankle sprain in Week 15 and was ruled out ahead of the contest. Stanley was also ruled out with a hamstring injury while Bullard is a healthy scratch.

Not on the Seahawks’ inactives list but notable is right tackle Brandon Shell, who, along with backup safety Damarious Randall, was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list due to close contacts testing positive for the disease. It is worth noting though that neither of those two have reportedly tested positive yet.

With those two going on the reserve list, running back Alex Collins and receiver Penny Hart are coming up for Week 17 as COVID-19 replacement players from Seattle’s practice squad. Veteran guard Alex Boone, who hasn’t played since Week 17, is also coming up for the game from the practice squad.

Week 17 will also mark the return of third-year cornerback Tre Flowers, who hasn’t played since Week 12 due to a hamstring injury. Due to the play of D.J. Reed, it seems unlikely Flowers will play much against the 49ers unless the Seahawks decide to rest more starters as the game goes on.

On the other side, the 49ers, as has been the case all season, are very beat up.

Starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was not activated from injured reserve for Week 17. He hasn’t played since these two teams faced off in Week 8, a game the Seahawks won 37-27. He has battled an ankle injury since then.

Not on the inactives list, like Garoppolo, are Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams and running back Raheem Mostert, who are on injured reserve with elbow and ankle injuries, respectively.

Also out is former Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who has only played in five games this season. He has a calf injury.

The 49ers are also without starting linebacker Dre Greenlaw (calf), receivers Deebo Samuel (hamstring) and Brandon Aiyuk (ankle), a 2020 first-round pick, as well as rookie first-round defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee).
