Analyzing a hypothetical trade involving Flynn, Jaguars

Matt Flynn’s future with the Seahawks has become a seemingly daily topic on “Cold Hard Facts.”

Jim Moore, Danny O’Neil, Dave Wyman and John Clayton revisited the subject Tuesday with a trade scenario proposed by a listener:

“Odds the Seahawks and Jags swap second-round picks in exchange for Matt Flynn?”

Clayton thought the trade would make sense as long as the difference in those second-rounders equates to a third- or fourth-round pick.

The draft value chart is a helpful tool for determining the value exchanged in trades involving draft picks. The chart has a point value for each selection, with the first pick worth the most points and the last pick the fewest.

I consulted the chart to find out what kind of value the Seahawks would be getting by exchanging second-round picks with Jacksonville. The Jaguars own the first pick in the second round, No. 33 overall. It’s my understanding that the Seahawks own the 26th pick in the second round, No. 58 overall, by virtue of a tiebreaker with Green Bay that calls for those teams to alternate the 25th and 26th pick in each round.

According to the chart, the difference in the 33rd and 58th overall picks is 260 points, which is equivalent in value to the second pick in the third round, No. 66 overall.

It takes two to tango, of course, and Clayton thinks the trade would make sense from the Jaguars’ perspective based on their need for quarterback to compete with Blaine Gabbert and the familiarity Flynn has with new head coach Gus Bradley, formerly Seattle’s defensive coordinator.

The video below includes additional thoughts on this hypothetical trade from Brock Huard and Mike Salk.
