Robinson Cano hit the 1,000-RBI milestone with a two-run single in the fifth inning of the Mariners’ 11-1 win over Houston on Tuesday, but there was another at-bat that perhaps made the night even more memorable for the 10-year veteran.
Cano crushed a grand slam off Astros reliever Michael Feliz in the seventh inning, his first as a member of the Mariners and 10th of his career, to make it a 9-0 Seattle lead and essentially put the game out of reach.

It was the continuation of what has been a big power year for Cano thus far. The slam was his seventh homer of the season, which moved him into a tie for the American League lead along with Houston’s Colby Rasmus, Toronto’s Josh Donaldson and Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas.
Cano’s batting average hasn’t been as stellar, as his 2-for-4 performance at the plate raised his clip to just .238. His slugging percentage (.538) is still pretty strong on account of the homers, though, which make up over a third of his 19 hits on the campaign.
The other good news about Cano’s big day at the plate – it more or less erased the memory of a defensive blunder he made earlier in the game. After taking a throw from shortstop Ketel Marte at second base to force out No. 2 in the top of the seventh, Cano didn’t throw to first, thinking the Mariners already had three outs. Luckily for Seattle, Nathan Karns struck out the next batter to end the frame, so no harm, no foul.
Cano and the Mariners will wrap up the three-game series against the Astros at 7:10 Wednesday on 710 ESPN Seattle.
