How much will the Seahawks use the option?

Danny O’Neil’s latest piece on 710Sports.com focuses on how NFL defenses are gearing up to stop dual-threat quarterbacks and how the Seahawks plan to minimize the risk of injury with Russell Wilson.

Monday’s post-show video provided a chance to address a follow-up question: how much will the Seahawks use the read-option in 2013?

For all the success the Seahawks had with the read-option during the final month of the season and in the playoffs, it was more of a wrinkle of their offense than a staple.

According to Lee Singer of ESPN Stats & Information via Mike Sando of ESPN.com, Seattle ran only five option rushes from Weeks 1 to 12 before beginning to feature it more during a Week 13 win over Chicago. Still, the 50 option rushes the Seahawks ran over the final five weeks of the regular season accounted for 30 percent of their running plays. And according to Sando, Wilson kept the ball on only 19 of those 55 option plays.

Will those numbers increase this season? O’Neil and Brock Huard discuss that in the video below.
