Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner is entering a contract year with the Seahawks, but the team has reportedly given him an early reward in the form of a pay raise.

Browner, 28, has signed what the league’s official transaction report called a “renegotiated contract,” which according to multiple reports amounts to an increase in the $555,000 he was scheduled to make in base salary this season. Exact terms of the new deal weren’t disclosed.

Browner is entering the final year of a three-year, league-minimum contract he signed two years ago. The renegotiated deal he just signed isn’t an extension and doesn’t affect his status as a potential unrestricted free agent after this season.

It’s important to note the Seahawks didn’t have to give Browner a raise even though he has inarguably outplayed his contract, making the Pro Bowl in 2011 and following that up with another strong season in 2012. They could have carried over the extra salary-cap space to next offseason, when cornerstone players like Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman will be candidates for contract extensions.

Instead, they used at least part of it on Browner, a move that if nothing else is a good gesture and one that won’t go unnoticed in Seattle’s locker room.

Brock Huard and Danny O’Neil shared more thoughts on the move in Friday’s edition of “Blue 42”.
