RENTON – It’s not a certainty that Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin will need surgery on his injured hip.

And even if he were to undergo surgery, that procedure might not necessarily be season-ending.

At least that’s how coach Pete Carroll summarized the situation on Saturday after practice.

“He might be able to come back here in a couple weeks and be ready to go,” Carroll said. “There may be some procedure that needs to take place, and there’s a number of different ways that can happen, and the lengths of the recovery depend on what has to take place.”

That’s about as clear an answer as the coach could provide to the question that is hanging over the first week of training camp.

No one knows how the injury will be addressed. Not until Harvin receives a second opinion, which Carroll confirmed will take place in New York on Tuesday.

“There’s a whole array of situations that could occur,” Carroll said. “We have to wait and see.”

One scenario is the injury could be addressed with treatment, with Harvin not necessarily missing time. Carroll mentioned that safety Kam Chancellor played through a similar injury without undergoing surgery.

“We know there have been guys with a similar injury that have played,” Carroll said. “And there’s guys with a similar injury that don’t. It takes some time, takes some procedures and stuff.”

Harvin’s recovery from surgery would depend upon the type of procedure, and Carroll was very clear that if Harvin does in fact undergo surgery, that wouldn’t necessarily be season-ending.

Camp Carroll: Day 3 overview

Pads: Helmets, shoulder pads.
Duration: 2 hours, 15 minutes.
Not practicing: FB Michael Robinson (ankle), LB Heath Farwell (back spasms) and DL Jesse Williams (knee). WR Sidney Rice rested the second half of practice.
PUP: WR Percy Harvin, TE Zach Miller, DE Chris Clemons, DL Greg Scruggs, CB Tharold Simon, RB Robert Turbin.
Non-football Injury list: LB Korey Toomer
Quoteworthy: “For us, it was good to get back to some real football for the guys who are down in the trenches. It was an important day. You could feel the energy the guys bring out onto the field.” – defensive coordinator Dan Quinn on the first day in pads.

For now, it’s just a matter of waiting until next week.

“He’s really frustrated because he wants to play so bad,” Carroll said. “He wants to be on the field. It’s killing him not to be out there. We just have to be really smart about that. Because it’s so early we have a lot of time. We’re going to utilize that.”

As for surgery?

“That’s a possibility,” Carroll said, “but we’re hoping that’s not the probability. We’re hoping it’s going to be better than that.”

Almost Miller time?

Carroll didn’t provide a timeline for tight end Zach Miller’s return to the field, but he did indicate he’s expected to be ready for the regular season.

“We’re not worried about that at all unless there’s some setbacks,” Carroll said.

Miller suffered a foot injury at the end of the offseason conditioning program, and his foot remained sore when he reported for training camp. He is on the Physically Unable to Perform list and can not practice, though he can be activated at any time up until Aug. 31.

“I don’t know what the time frame is going to be,” Carroll said of Miller’s return, “because we have to get him on the ground running, and make sure that he’s in good enough shape when we break him in full speed practice.”

Notes

  • • Rookie CB Tharold Simon remains out of practice with a sore foot, and in fact, he is not running in full weight-bearing exercise yet as he tries to recover. “He’s got a sore foot, and it’s one he has played with before,” Carroll said, “but we’re trying to get him past the point where it’s going to reoccur.”
  • • Veteran FB Michael Robinson missed a second consecutive day with an ankle injury, getting treatment Saturday while the rest of the team practiced. “It surprised all of us,” Carroll said of the injury. “He had no problem with it in the offseason until after the first day of practice he woke up in the morning with a sore ankle.”
  • • Rookie DT Jesse Williams tweaked his knee in practice Friday, Carroll said, and did not practice Saturday. “Nothing serious,” Carroll said. “Again, just resting him, taking care of him.”
