Seahawks notebook: Rice in Europe for leg treatment

RENTON – One of the Seahawks’ wide receivers traveled a long ways for a specialty procedure regarding his leg.

Except we’re not talking about Percy Harvin and his trip to New York, where it was determined that he’ll undergo surgery on his injured hip.

Camp Carroll: Day 6 (Practice 5)

Gear: Helmets, full pads
Practice: 10 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.
DNP: DE Cliff Avril (hamstring), OT Michael Bowie (hamstring), CB Ron Parker (hamstring), DL Michael Bennett (paternity leave), WR Sidney Rice (European mystery treatment).
PUP: WR Percy Harvin, TE Zach Miller, DE Chris Clemons, DL Greg Scruggs, CB Tharold Simon, RB Robert Turbin.
Non-football Injury list: LB Korey Toomer.

This one concerns Sidney Rice, who went to Europe for what coach Pete Carroll characterized as a non-surgical procedure. Just what that treatment was, however, Carroll wasn’t certain.

“I can’t really tell you because I’d make a mistake,” he joked after practice Tuesday.

In fact, he wasn’t even specific on the country, first saying that Rice went to Switzerland before mentioning Sweden.

OK, then. How about the amount of time that Rice will have to miss?

“When he comes back, he’ll go right back on the field,” Carroll said. “So he didn’t get hurt. We’re just trying to help him along. We think we have something going here that might really help him.”

Rice led Seattle with 50 catches last season, playing a full 16-game schedule for only the second time in his six-year NFL career.

Seeing clearly

To say receiver Jermaine Kearse is more focused in not a metaphor nor an exaggeration.

Kearse had offseason Lasik surgery, a procedure to improve his vision that took less than 5 minutes and cleared things up for him.

“I don’t have to deal with the hassle of contacts,” said Kearse, who’s in his second year out of Washington. “I’ve got astigmatism so sometimes they move around and one eye may be blurry. It’s nice to not have to worry about that.”

Kearse had worn contacts since his sophomore year of college. He caught 180 passes in his four seasons as a Husky, but also developed a reputation for dropped passes. He was undrafted, signed with the Seahawks and played his way first onto the practice squad and later onto Seattle’s 53-man roster, primarily as a special-teams contributor.

He’s making a solid case to make the team coming out of training camp this year.

“We like him across the board,” Carroll said of Kearse. “One of the great statements for him is he’s one of our core special-teams guys.”

Notes

• DT Jesse Williams returned to practice after missing the past two workouts with a sore knee.

• The Seahawks have signed LB/TE Jameson Konz, who was previously with the team, and released TE Victor Marshall.

• LB Heath Farwell returned to practice after missing three days of practice due to back spasms.
