The Seahawks have eagerly been anticipating top free-agent signing Cliff Avril’s on-field debut for the team at defensive end. They’ll have to wait even longer.

Avril, who has missed the first three preseason games with foot and hamstring woes, re-aggravated the injury when he got back on the practice field, head coach Pete Carroll told “Brock and Danny” Monday.

“Cliff has really been most unfortunate that he hasn’t had a chance to even go. He tried to come back and couldn’t quite get going again,” Carroll said. “He got back on the practice field and injured his hammy again, so we don’t know when he’s gonna get back.”

The signing of Avril away from Detroit was a coup for the Seahawks this offseason, as he’s coming off three straight season of at least 8.5 sacks. But the fact that he’s been unable to stay on the field is troublesome for a pass rush that was a big focus for Seattle heading into the 2013 season.

Carroll said that other pass rushers have shown promise in Avril’s absence this preseason.

“I think Michael Bennett’s shown us what we wanna see. We picked up a little bit of juice from Mike Morgan – (he’s) become of more a threat pass-rushing, and so has Benson Mayowa,” Carroll said. “I’m hoping that those guys will show us something as they finish this next game.”

Seattle closes out the preseason Thursday against Oakland at CenturyLink Field.

“(Roster spots are) still on the line, (and) these guys are still battling for it,” Carroll said.
