Seahawks’ Sherman earns Player of the Week honors

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman spent much of Sunday’s win over San Francisco covering 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin, who entered the game as the league’s leading receiver but finished the night with just one catch for seven yards.

As if that wasn’t enough, a leaping interception was the cherry on top for a performance that earned Sherman NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Wednesday.

Boldin caught 13 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 but was held without a catch until the fourth quarter on Sunday, by which point the Seahawks had put the game out of reach. Sherman wasn’t even in coverage when Boldin caught his lone pass of the night.

Seattle’s cornerbacks typically stick to one side of the field, but Sherman asked coach Pete Carroll last week if he could cover Boldin regardless of where he lined up.

“I asked Coach for the challenge. I wanted to follow him,” Sherman said. “There were a lot of things said this week. He had a great game last week. He went for 200-plus yards and had a resurgence. There’s a lot of talk about elite corners and who follows who; I wanted to negate that.”
