Seahawks notebook: Percy Harvin making progress

RENTON – A day after Seattle’s first loss, coach Pete Carroll addressed a number of comebacks, starting with the one that he expects to occur this week: that of center Max Unger.

“We’re going to count on Max practicing this week,” Carroll said.

Two more comebacks were more touch and go. Right tackle Breno Giacomini is back with the team after spending last week in New York, and while he won’t be ready to play this week, Giacomini is making progress. Tight end Zach Miller has not been ruled out after missing last week’s game with a hamstring injury, but he won’t be ready to practice right away this week.

“It will take until the end of the week before we’ll have a chance to have him back,” Carroll said.

Then there was one comeback that is progressing quickly, but a return Carroll wouldn’t put a timetable on: receiver Percy Harvin’s. He is eligible to begin practicing after this week’s game against Tennessee, though Carroll declined to even address the possibility of when he might be back.

“It wouldn’t do us any good to talk that way at this time,” Carroll said.

That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been progress, though. Harvin was evaluated in New York last week by the doctor who performed the surgery on Harvin’s hip on Aug. 1. He returned to the team this week.

“He’s ready to take the next level of training,” Carroll said. “I know he’s very enthusiastic about getting going and getting back and all. So we’ll just have to see what happens. It’s a very positive response at this point.”

Carroll said Harvin has progressed to on-the-ground running, working out with team trainers on Monday.

“I haven’t seen him yet live and in color,” Carroll said. “I’m looking forward to see how this goes. His attitude is perfect about getting back and doing everything he can to get out there.”

Harvin made a statement on his Twitter account on Monday: “12th man I’m back and ready, countdown begins.”

Harvin is on the Physically Unable to Perform List. He is eligible to begin practicing after the team plays its sixth game. Once he begins practicing, the team has three weeks to practice before it must decide whether to activate him.

Notes

• Linebacker Bobby Wagner left the game for a series in Indianapolis on Sunday with a sprained ankle. Heath Farwell replaced him for several plays before Wagner returned.

“He finished the game so we’ll have to wait and see how that works out this week,” Carroll said of Wagner. “We’ll see what that means.”

• Linebacker K.J. Wright also left the game with an injury, but returned and is OK going forward, according to Carroll.

• Defensive linemen Michael Bennett and Jordan Hill suffered thigh bruises, said Carroll, but the injuries aren’t expected to impact the availability of either player this week. Hill, Seattle’s third-round pick, made his regular-season debut.
