Brother hopes to lure Seahawks’ Bennett to Bears

Based on the season he’s having with the Seahawks, Michael Bennett will likely have a decent list of suitors should Seattle allow him to reach free agency.

Among them could be Chicago – at least his brother would hope so.

Martellus Bennett, a tight end who’s in his first season with the Bears, told Chicago radio hosts Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein earlier this week that he’s trying to make it happen.

“I’m telling him already, ‘Hey, our kids can grow up together. You’re right around the corner from me,’ ” Martellus said.

The two were previously teammates at Texas A&M. Michael, who turned 28 in November, is 14 months older.

“We’re extremely close. We talk every day, all day,” Martellus said. “And I think he would be a huge asset to the team, so I’m recruiting him already. I’m already whispering in the defensive coaches’ ears and everything, ‘Hey, you saw my brother last night? He had an interception.’ “

It was actual a fumble that Michael returned for a touchdown during that Monday night game against New Orleans, the highlight of what has been a strong season. Michael, who signed a one-year deal with Seattle after four seasons in Tampa Bay, also has 6.5 sacks, which is second on the team and an impressive number for someone who often lines up as a defensive tackle and doesn’t play every down.

We’re several months away from NFL free agency becoming a germane topic of discussion, of course, but this is something to file away for when the offseason approaches. That is unless Bennett re-signs with Seattle before then.
